North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Paves Way for Luxury Living by the San Diego Bay

The City of San Diego’s downtown waterfront, already known for breathtaking views, is going to get a facelift designed to transform the area into an inspiring destination spot for luxurious living, eclectic entertaining and stunning works of world-class art, thanks to the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan (NEVP).

This ambitious plan involves up to ten separate projects jointly sponsored by the Port and the redevelopment arm of the City of San Diego. The design includes additional acres of park and open esplanades and more than 1,700 trees. Phase 1 was just approved by City Council for over $28 million and is soon to begin.

The first phase of the Embarcadero’s showcase of urban majesty will be enlarging the waterfront promenade from 28 feet to over 100 feet wide. Harbor Drive will be narrowed from six lanes to three to accommodate the wider expanse of open space along the bay. Kiosks will be moved back from the waterfront in new pavilions. This opens even more spectacular views and access to San Diego Bay.

Asphalt will be removed to make way for hundreds of fragrant Jacaranda trees that bloom twice a year with delectable clusters of trumpeting purple flowers, providing postcard-perfect framing for photographs and fresh vistas of the bay. In addition to re-creating a spacious promenade for pedestrians, the plan provides for commissioned public art that will give the area a new sophistication and high-end appeal. The open areas, some with cover, are designed to be aesthetically inspiring and will allow space for entertainers and artists to perform. These wide passages will also accommodate non-motorized vehicles such as pedi-cabs and bicycles.

This area will be perfect for an early-morning walk or a stroll after an elegant dining experience. Imagine mimes, poets and musicians performing for your entertainment pleasure. There will be plentiful benches from which to people-watch, read books, take in a concert or performance art while enjoying San Diego’s famous fresh air and abundant sunshine.

You’ll also be close by to even more great dining, museums and shopping. One of our city’s best jewels is our glistening bay with the billowing sails and passing ships, including the Euterpe. That’s the original name of the oldest, active, sailing vessel in the world. She’s called the Star of India and is docked at the Maritime Museum nearby. Her lively history includes mutinies and pirates. North Embarcadero is already primed to host this artistic muse.

It’s our belief that designing and implementing this spectacular vision for San Diego’s Embarcadero is one of the City’s best investments in her future. If you’re curious about owning a home in the award-winning Sapphire Tower, we invite you to stop by and check out the amenities and spectacular San Diego Bay views. We also would be happy to share with you our grand vision of luxury living in San Diego. It’s pretty special, too.
